America was founded on the ideals of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. In the darkest hours of WWI, WWII, Vietnam, and the Civil War, the Constitution has led us. Let's not forget this as we look for those responsible for this atrocity, and refrain from condemming people based solely on race, color or creed. Justice must be done, and must be swift and direct, but we should not abandon our ideals in this darkest hour. I feel confident that the nation will rebound, stronger than before.
Lisa, Boston
I can't say I feel any more fear now than I did before. I've done a lot of traveling in Europe, and it's hard not to notice how lax security is at airports in the United States when compared to security in Europe. I couldn't carry a small Swiss army knife on a plane leaving Switzerland, yet I've never been questioned about it in when going through security at U.S. airports. Security in the United States consists of two questions at the check-in counter, usually asked in a monotone, and some minimum wage workers barely glancing at the x-ray machine as people rush through the checkpoint. It has never looked like anyone was taking security seriously. Given this, I can't say I felt entirely safe before, so I don't really feel less safe now. Shocked and horrified, yes -- but surprised or less secure, no.

This is beyond anything I could imagine in my life time. Prayers go out to the families of the loved ones lost.

This attack on US soil is UNACCEPTABLE! Our borders have been breached and we need to defend our freedom. The United States of America is the strongest country in the world and we need to re-aquaint the world with our military prowess. Revenge will be a sweet taste.
Matt, Marblehead
We have definitely lost our sense of innocence and our belief that "it can't happen here." However, what is really important is what we haven't lost: our faith, our confidence, our determination, and the absolute certainty that we will rebound from this horrific act of cowardice.
Jim, Weymouth
This is the time we need to fight back quick and strong! Very strong!
Posey, Boston
Like almost everyone else who has lived or traveled abroad, I always thought that Americans were incredibly spoiled. Many societies live with daily trauma, without readily available medical care, with no recourse when it is the police or the military who inflict the injuries. Even after the events of yesterday, we are better off than most of our fellow inhabitants of this planet.
And we know it. 90% of us are back at work, riding the subway, going up in the Pru and the Hancock Tower. I even heard someone complain because he couldn't get a plane today.
Marisol, Revere
I think we all feel a sense of fear and vulnerability. Especially with the thought that that could have easily been us (Boston). I know that I went to bed last night knowing that I kissed my kids goodnight and hugged them a little longer, but sent them to school today knowing that would be the safest place for them to be. Its a shame that we have been taken, if even for a little while, our sense of freedom away. But, I also know that we will as a society and a nation, overcome and put our lives back in order. Please pray for the victims and their families.
connie, worcester
No, I don't feel vulnerable or afraid. I did yesterday but today I'm angry. These terrorists don't have the values we have, they live for violence and that's the language they speek and that's the only way we can effectively get our message across. Let's also be discriminating with our financial support! No more handouts for Palestine!!!! As for security, there can never be enough when it comes to protecting citizens. As far as I'm concerned, let the government install cameras and recordng devices in airports..or wherever...they can even tap my phone ..As long as I have nothing to hide, stepping up security won't infringe upon my freedom and it might keep me and those I love, alive.
A Man
What I saw.
I saw a bar full of people as I ordered a beer. Surprised at the capacity. I assumed that most where like me. Needed to get out among people as my day was spent indoors staring, shocked at the events unfolding on TV.
I saw people laughing and joking. I saw an almost jubilant reaction in some as they just witnessed a Hollywood movie explosion on CNN as a plane slides into the side of Tower 2.
I saw men and women "dressed to kill" for a night on the town, out to meet people and party.
I saw my reflection in the mirror as I laughed out loud, for a moment forgetting about what happened today.
I saw a replay of a man falling. Falling after waking up early this morning, having breakfast, showering and shaving. Deciding to wear the blue suit as he thought about his day filled with meetings, lunches, dinner dates. Strolling to work with his mind awash with everyday mundane thoughts of where to get his morning coffee, should I add more money to my 401k? Where should I take my girlfriend this weekend? How should I spend my vacation days before the end of the year? What to get my Mom for her Birthday coming up? Never once contemplating having to decide to either jump to his death 60 stories up or be consumed by fire and smoke.
I saw a large hill in front of me as I walked home. Leaving behind a bar filled with too many shiny, happy people.
I saw a face mask on the sidewalk. The same type of mask that rescue workers wore while trying franticly to rescue the Fireman, Policeman and civilians trapped beneath 110 stories.
I saw a car drive by me with the music loud and the base thumping. Seeming oblivious to the carnage across the country as the remaining people trapped under use there cell phones to dial for help and say goodbye to loved ones.
I saw old writing in the cement that said simply. "World Peace 1983."
I saw a new face in the mirror, a face I didn't recognize from the same mirror last night. That man last night was worrying about work, 401k's, coffee, vacations and his Mom's birthday coming up. I imagine I will never see that man again.
That man is gone.
