[an error occurred while processing this directive] Big Dig contractor severs major telecommunications line in Boston

By Associated Press, 5/13/2003

BOSTON -- A contractor working on the Big Dig accidentally severed a telecommunications line while working in the city's South Boston neighborhood on Tuesday.

The accident occurred early in the work day as the contractor was doing excavation and resurfacing work on the massive $14.6 billion highway project.

The accident cut the fiber link that connects several web sites, including The Boston Globe's, to their Internet hosts, making it difficult for computer users to call up the web sites.

Service was largely restored later in the day.
