Heliport opens to MedFlight

The new medical emergency heliport behind the new Public Safety Facility on Main Street in Acton is ready to accept Boston MedFlight helicopters, according to Dean Charter, director of municipal properties. The landing area is made of a cinderblock-like material permitting grass to grow. It can be plowed in winter to prevent helicopters from sinking into the grass when the ground is wet.

Charter said MedFlight helicopters based at Hanscom Field will fly to Acton to pick up critically injured people for transportation to treatment centers in Boston and Worcester.

The heliport was built with $21,000 in funds raised by three volunteers.
