WINSTED, Conn. (AP) — The town attorney for Winchester says former town Finance Manager Henry Centrella has been fired amid a criminal investigation of alleged accounting irregularities.
Town Attorney Kevin Nelligan told the Board of Selectmen on Tuesday night that Centrella was fired ‘‘for cause’’ by the town manager last week.
The 57-year-old Centrella had been on paid administrative leave since Nov. 9 in connection with the alleged accounting irregularities. He was the town’s first and only finance director for the past 32 years.
Centrella hasn’t returned messages seeking comment.
State police are investigating the alleged irregularities, which were discovered during an audit of the town’s 2011-2012 budget. Town officials say problems include an unauthorized $100,000 transfer and a multiyear deficit by the water and sewer commission that commission members didn’t know about.
