MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (AP) — A 38-year-old East Hampton man has been charged with murdering his girlfriend after months of denying any role in her death.

Authorities charged Anthony Garofalo on Monday with murder, strangulation and tampering with evidence in the killing of 30-year-old Jini Barnum, whose body was found in a shallow grave in Glastonbury in September.

Barnum went missing from her and Garofalo’s apartment in East Hampton last July. Barnum and Garofalo had a daughter who was six weeks old at the time. Neighbors told police the couple had argued before Barnum vanished.

Garofalo had been detained on a parole violation since August and was arraigned on the new charges Monday in Middletown Superior Court. A judge set bond at $1 million.

Garofalo’s lawyer says his client continues to insist on his innocence.end of story marker
