Top military scientist: building a cyber army with few qualified recruits
The Air Force has a message for computer geeks: send us your resumes. At least that is the word from Mark Maybury, a computer scientist at the government-funded MITRE corporation in Bedford who was tapped in 2010 to serve as the chief scientist for the US Air Force. The Lowell native and Chelmsford resident, who will return from Washington to his old job this summer, says the Pentagon is struggling to maintain its technological edge in the realm of cyberspace. And a primary reason is a lack of new talent. "If you told me I want you to hire 1,000 cyber guys tomorrow, I'd count up all my friends and might have 60 or if really lucky might find 100," he explained. "But 1,000?"

  • Massachusetts judges win $30,000 raise from legislators

Salaries for the state's judges would climb by $30,000 during the next three years under a measure that won legislative approval this week with little fanfare. Supporters said the increase, which the state Senate approved Thursday following earlier backing by the House, would lift salaries from among the nation's lowest to the middle of the pack. But critics said the raise was excessive, given the tax hikes political leaders are proposing. Under the plan, the yearly salaries of trial court judges will jump from $130,000 to $160,000, a 23 percent boost. The raises, which would affect nearly 400 trial and appellate court judges, would cost an estimated $22 million over during three years. The senator who sponsored the measure said jurists had not received raises in 15 years.(   05/25/2013 12:00 AM )
