Labor Day marks last shining moment for summer weather; rain expected to move in Tuesday

Beach bums, take note: Labor Day could be the last chance to bask in the sun before clouds and classes set in.

“Labor day is looking good, mostly sunny with highs in the low 70s,” National Weather Service meteorologist Alan Dunham said.

But clouds could start encroaching on clear skies Monday night, signaling the start of a rainy week, Dunham said.

Tuesday is expected to be mostly cloudy with possible late-morning thunderstorms, though highs could stay in the mid-70s, according to the National Weather Service.

The mid-week rain could be partially caused by the remains of Hurricane Isaac joining moisture formed along the Massachusetts coast, Dunham said.

“The remnants of Isaac are sitting in southern Illinois, and some of that moisture is going to be moving in. But a lot of that moisture is forming up the coast,” Dunham said.

Another quarter-inch to half inch of rain is expected Wednesday, with a 70 percent chance of precipitation and highs in the upper 70s.

Rain could persist Thursday with highs in the low 80s, Dunham said.

“Then it looks like we dry out Friday with mostly sunny skies, highs in the low 80s,” he said.
