Resale shops, including a dozen or so in the Boston area, reported a 13 increase in sales of pre-owned items, even as the Commerce Department reports a 7.3% drop. But what’s most surprising about this data isn’t that more people are buying used. It’s that more people are buying used for others, an act frowned on in the past as distasteful. NARTS, a resale trade group, says its member stores expect gift sales to jump by 32% this year.
