Haverhill drunk driving victim's husband forgives
HAVERHILL, Mass.—The husband of a Haverhill woman killed by a drunken driver brought a court room to near tears when he offered forgiveness to the woman who caused his wife's death.
Bill LaPierre said "I forgive you" to Lisa Leavitt after she pleaded guilty on Wednesday to motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence of alcohol in connection with the death in December of LaPierre's wife of 37 years.
Karen LaPierre was struck just after 5 a.m. as she loaded doughnuts into her car for a post-Mass social gathering at her church.
Leavitt was sentenced to 2 1/2 years behind bars.
The Eagle-Tribune (http://bit.ly/H3BTYz) reports that Leavitt's attorney says his client never wanted to go to trial and never asked him to explore a plea deal, she just wanted to take responsibility.
