Holbrook officials are trying to crack down on roadside dumping. Board of Health chairman Paul Callinan said the problem, which involves mainly construction and home improvement debris, has gotten “really bad,” and perpetrators are difficult to catch. One day last week, the town received three reports of illegal dumping, but by the time officials arrived on the scene the perpetrators were gone. The fine set decades ago for dumping is $25, but the board hopes to win an increase at the May 1 Town Meeting to $500 for a first offense, $1,000 for a second, and prosecution thereafter. The proper place to dispose of shingles and other debris is at SEMASS in Braintree, he said. Residents who observe roadside dumping are asked to call Holbrook Police at 781-767-1212 or the Board of Health at 781-767-3030. - Jennette Barnes
