In a once-forlorn corner of Boston Common, a classically trained pianist sat at her instrument today and played Gershwin, Cole Porter, and Miles Davis. Nearby two young men played chess. Other people pulled newspapers and magazines off a reading rack, sat back on new park benches, and listened to the music. Welcome to the new plaza around Brewer Fountain at the intersection of Park and Tremont streets. The overhaul of the area unveiled today was intended to do more than refurbish Brewer Fountain and restore the granite plaza - it was intended to give people a reason to stop, sit down, and spend time in America’s oldest park.
