As the tense diplomatic standoff over Chinese dissident Chen Guangcheng unfolded in recent days, Shuai Nie followed the developments with keen interest, from Chen’s daring escape from house arrest to his dramatic plea to the US government for help. Like many Chinese-Americans in the Boston area, Nie, 28, a doctoral student in chemistry at Tufts University who moved here from China five years ago, felt a personal stake in the riveting Chen saga, a crisis that has captured international attention and underscored tensions between the United States and China.
