SAN FRANCISCO—A man accused of fatally shooting a father and his two sons in San Francisco traffic is testifying in his murder trial.

Twenty-five-year-old Edwin Ramos took the stand Monday and began by describing his troubled childhood.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/IwPS9f) Ramos testified that he was verbally abused by his mother and physically abused by her boyfriends. The illegal immigrant from El Salvador says he found refuge with gangs.

Prosecutors say Ramos opened fire on a car carrying Tony Bologna and his three sons in June 2008, after mistaking one of them for a rival gang member. All were killed, except son Andrew Bologna, who testified earlier in the trial.

Ramos maintains he was only driving the car and that his passenger unexpectedly opened fire.
