War in Kosovo: Background

The NATO strikes [ Timeline | Q&A ]
Originally said to be carried out by US-led NATO forces to force Yugoslavia's president -- Slobodan Milosevic -- to stop his onslaught against Kosovo's ethnic Albanians. However, Milosevic's Serbian military forces have increased their reprisals since the strikes began. This timeline contains archived video reports from New England Cable News and coverage from the Boston Globe along with daily recaps of the war's developments.

The Region [ Map of Region, Synopsis ]
Long before the NATO air strikes, Serbian forces were shelling and burning villages in an arc across northern Kosovo. Bordered by Bosnia, Macedonia, Albania and Montenegro, the region is historically destabilized by a mix of poverty, war and competing religious views.

The history of conflict in the Kosovo region dates back centuries. This chronology looks at events related to the Kosovo conflict between the first pro-independence demonstrations by ethnic Albanians in Kosovo in 1968, the first day of the NATO strikes, and the peace agreement accepted by Milosevic's government.

Key players [ Serb and NATO figures ]
