Acts of patriotism
Last Tuesday's terrorist attacks have prompted an outpouring of nationalist sentiment on a scale not seen since World War II. What is the most original or inspiring display of patriotism you've witnessed over the past week?
My brother lives in Belgrade and he called and you could hear people in the background singing our national anthem. I cried.

I attended a wedding this past weekend. 30-40 guests could not attend including the groom's wedding party. The band played "New York, New York" and everyone joined in a circle and sang. It was touching. "It's up to you, New York....New York".

Considering last November's Presidential election came down to a couple of thousand votes, demonstrating how greatly divided the political parties of this nation are ... I feel Americans have rallied behind President Bush with exceptional dedication. I have never been more proud to be an American. Our democratic system really does work.

Driving through Newton Corner Saturday night....a group of kids were standing on the side of the street waving flags and a sign that said "honk if you love America."

Last Thursday I scoured the earth trying to find an American Flag to put on my car -- I finally found one! On my way to work Friday morning a man in his shinny new BMW beeped his horn and gave me a thumbs up. It was then that I realized the United States has really become a whole instead of tiny pieces scattered through-out. I cried after that incident, but it was an amazing feeling.

I think it's wonderful the way WE American's are coming together and I hope it lasts forever. Since last Tuesday, I have seen good ole Red, White & Blue displayed as flags, pins, hats, buttons, on cars, houses.....you name it and it is truly a beautiful sight to see. GOD BLESS AMERICA - WE WILL PERSEVERE!

The Red Cross workers at the Blood Donor Center in Peabody. On Tuesday, I saw them working long into the night to make sure that the hundreds of people who showed up to donate blood could do so. Despite the shock of that day's events and an obvious lack of staff on hand to deal with the overwhelming public response to the crisis, the Red Cross workers were unflaggingly caring, upbeat, and professional.

Friday night my husband and I were driving to Abington to attend a fundraiser to fight cancer. On our way there (at 7 p.m.) we saw many people on Rte. 18 standing on street corners waving American flags and holding candles. When we left to head home (at 1 a.m.) we saw many of the same people, plus some, still out waving the flag and holding candles. That to me was inspirational.
