Elizabeth Warren to be sworn in for Mass. residents on Saturday by Elena Kagan
Democrat Elizabeth Warren is being sworn in as a US senator on Thursday in Washington, but Massachusetts supporters unable to make it can attend a ceremonial swearing in on Saturday at Roxbury Community College.
The oath of office this weekend will be administered by Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan, Warren’s former boss at Harvard Law School and whose nomination to the high court the senator Warren is replacing, Republican Scott Brown, opposed.
The ceremony will be at 2 p.m. in the Boston college’s Media Arts Center.
Saturday’s ceremony is actually the third of three swearings in for Warren.
She will join all her fellow senators in the Senate Chamber shortly after noon Thursday for a mass oath-taking administered by Vice President Joe Biden, who also serves as the body’s president. With that, she will officially become a member of the 113th Congress.
Afterward, Biden will reenact the swearing in individually for each member who wants it in the Old Senate Chamber. The occasion allows for ceremonial family pictures.
An aide said they expected Warren to remain in Washington on Friday, before returning to Massachusetts for Saturday's ceremony. The senator-elect wanted the public ceremony to celebrate with those who supported her election in November.
