WASHINGTON -- Senator William “Mo” Cowan was appointed Tuesday to Senate committees on agriculture, commerce and small business, according to a statement from Majority Leader Harry Reid.

The assignments for the Massachusetts Democrat came after approval by the Democratic Steering Committee. Cowan, an interim senator appointed by Governor Deval Patrick in late January, will represent the Bay State until the June 25 special election to fill Secretary of State John Kerry’s former seat.

In his first official Senate vote Tuesday, Cowan supported reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act. The bill passed, 78-22.
