Republican National Committee Summer Meeting coming to Boston next week
If you walk down Summer Street next week, you might bump into an unusual cast of characters in the heart of Democratic Massachusetts: Newt Gingrich, Chris Christie and Reince Priebus.
The Republican National Committee is holding its summer meeting at the Westin Boston Waterfront hotel next Wednesday through Friday, bringing top GOP leaders to the Hub.
Gingrich, the former US House Speaker and White House hopeful; Christie, the New Jersey governor and potential 2016 presidential contender; and Priebus, the chairman of the RNC are among the big names slated to attend.
Former US Senator Scott Brown is also scheduled to be there, as is Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett and former Puerto Rico Governor Luis G. Fortuño.
However, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, the 2012 GOP nominee for President, is not slated to attend the affair, RNC Communications Director Sean Spicer said.
It might seem strange for the GOP summer conclave to take place in the capital of a very blue state. But Spicer said politics was absent from the decision about where to hold the meeting, which was made in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombings.
“As we were getting ready to finalize the selection, the tragedy in Boston had just taken place,” Spicer said. “Like so many other Americans, we looked for some small way that we could stand with Boston.”
He added that the RNC would be working with a local charity related to the bombings, and said details about that arrangement would be forthcoming.Joshua Miller can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org. Follow him on Twitter @jm_bos.
