MINNEAPOLIS -- It was another one-run win. Just like the night before. The Red Sox are 7-4 in one-run games and this is a good sign. It means they are you're coming up with the big hit at the right time. It means their your bullpen is holding leads. It means they're you're scoring late in games. It means their you're starting pitcher is keeping them you in games. It's all good. Look at the Orioles, who won 29 one-run games last season en route to 93 wins. And so the Red Sox have added a new dimension in 2013. to their 2013 repertoire. An essential dimension. ( 05/18/2013 7:04 AM )

MINNEAPOLIS -- Stephen Drew has never won a Gold Glove for his play at shortstop and probably never will. His style is defined far more by efficiency than flashiness. It's something that he works on. "Some guys can do a lot of fancy stuff. But I try and make a hard play look routine," Drew said before the Red Sox played the Minnesota Twins on Friday night. "Every time I take ground balls when working out, I'm always in a game mode. I never change that." Through Thursday, Drew had committed one error this season. "As advertised," manager John Farrell said. "He's played as we fully expected. Very dependable." ( 05/18/2013 7:04 AM )

Jonny Gomes knew exactly what would happen when he saw Red Sox teammate Will Middlebrooks bunt two runners over in the top of the 10th inning Friday night. As he expected, the Minnesota Twins intentionally walked Stephen Drew to load the bases. That put the pressure on Gomes with one out. "The worst thing you can do there is if hit the ball on the ground," Gomes said. "I was looking for something at least a little up." Twins pitcher Josh Roenicke threw a slider with just enough space under it for Gomes to hit the ball to center field. His sacrifice fly gave the Red Sox a 3-2 victory. "Sometimes it's good to have a little uppercut," Gomes said. ( 05/18/2013 7:00 AM )

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Will Middlebrooks missed only one game after he collided with Red Sox teammate David Ross while chasing a foul ball May 7 and bruised several ribs on his right side. But that didn't mean the pain went away. Middlebrooks had trouble catching his breath in one game last week and called time to get that under control. He also had trouble sleeping for several nights. "It was one of those moments in the career of a young player when you have to earn some stripes and stay out there," said veteran outfielder Jonny Gomes, the veteran outfielder. "You can't win a game sitting on the bench." Perseverance paid off for Middlebrooks on Thursday night. His three-run double in the ninth inning gave the Sox a 4-3 victory against the Tampa Bay Rays. Daniel Bard was part of the Red Sox' starting rotation at this time a year ago. He was 3-4 with a 4.30 earned run average, showing just enough to continue getting chances. Now the Red Sox are wrestling with whether it's a good idea to have Bard continue pitching for Double A Portland given his mounting control problems. Bard walked five of the nine batters he faced on Wednesday night and threw two wild pitches. Only eight of his 30 pitches were strikes. The Red Sox called Bard up to the majors on April 24, saying at the time he had a chance to remain in their bullpen. He pitched in two games and was demoted back to Portland on April 28. The 27-year-old righthander has struggled mightily since. ( 05/17/2013 7:44 AM )

The decision by Pawtucket manager Gary DiSarcina to pull Jose Iglesias during a recent game after not running out a ground ball, followed by a three-game benching, was meant as much to remind Iglesias why he was with the PawSox as it was to discipline him. DiSarcina recalled as a roving infield coach three years ago feeding grounders to the shortstop, then 19 and earmarked for success in the major leagues. "He was an absolute pleasure to be around," DiSarcina said. "I couldn't hit enough ground balls out there for him. He was enjoying it." The circumstances of Iglesias's current stint with the PawSox are different, though. It was only logical that he would be sent down once Stephen Drew returned from the disabled list, but that didn't make it easier for Iglesias to accept.( 05/17/2013 12:00 AM )
