He hikes in the Blue Hills with his dog, Bear, by his side and plays in two recreational hockey leagues to stay in shape over the summer.

“Great for the legs,’’ said Sam Calley, a 5-foot-11, 260-pound defensive tackle from Weymouth who is gearing up for his final season at Curry College.

A senior captain, Calley showed plenty of spring in his step last season, when he led the Colonels with six sacks, was second with 9.5 tackles for loss, and racked up 54 total tackles.

“There’s no better defensive lineman in our league and he may just be the best,” said Curry coach Skip Bandini.

A first team New England Football Conference (Boyd Division) selection last season, Calley also captained the Weymouth High football team as a senior.
