Not a lot of fun in these games

End the preseason nonsense. It's time for the real thing. On a night when the running game was a top priority, the Patriots couldn't get out of first gear and were stomped by the Giants in a 19-14 loss. When it mattered, they tried to run the ball and didn't get far. (By Mike Reiss, Boston Globe, 12 a.m.)

Bits from Belichick

Brady's exhibition season: 0 for 4

The Patriots better hope quarterback Tom Brady responds to missing the preseason the same way Randy Moss did last year. (By Christopher L. Gasper, Boston Globe, 12 a.m.)

Backup battle still up in the air

The good news is the "practice games," as Patriots coach Bill Belichick called them last night, have come to a conclusion. The bad news may be that the Patriots look like they need more practice to be ready for the regular season. (By Christopher L. Gasper, Boston Globe, 12 a.m.)

'Pacman' is fully reinstated

Adam "Pacman" Jones did what he had to do to get back into the NFL for real. He stayed out of trouble. The cornerback-kick returner was fully reinstated yesterday from his 17-month NFL suspension, which followed an accumulation of arrests and legal problems. (Boston Globe, 12 a.m.)

Patriots rookies first-class so far

The Patriots' 2007 rookies certainly left their mark, but it was a black mark. For whatever reason, the Class of '07 was a failure. (Above) Linebacker Vince Redd is among the rookies trying to impress the coaching staff. (By Christopher L. Gasper, Boston Globe, 8/28/08)

Gasper: What to watch vs. Giants

The Globe's Chris Gasper provides three things to watch (one being backup quarterback Matt Cassel, left) when the Patriots visit the New York Giants in their final exhibition game Thursday night.

Exhibition a giant opportunity

Long shots, close calls, veterans clinging to jobs, tonight is your last chance to convince Bill Belichick that you belong on the Week 1 roster of the 2008 New England Patriots. (By Christopher L. Gasper, Boston Globe, 8/28/08)

Merriman decides knee surgery can wait

The surgeon's knife can wait. Shawne Merriman is going to play football, two torn knee ligaments and all. (Boston Globe, 8/28/08)

Looking a bit trimmer

It's the unpleasant side of the NFL this time of year for both players and coaches - cuts. Coaches know they have to make them. Players know they have to be made. But that doesn't make it any easier for either side. Bill Belichick made the first NFL-mandated reduction yesterday. (Boston Globe, 8/27/08)

Prop comic at work in Brady's absence?

Tom Brady was not at practice yesterday, at least during the media portion, after appearing at practice on Monday. Adding intrigue - and possibly horseplay - to the situation was a set of crutches that had been propped up in Brady's locker, one day after reporters spied a walking boot there. (Boston Globe, 8/27/08)

Kickoff for Hall is on target

All systems are go for the inaugural induction weekend at The Hall at Patriot Place, which will be highlighted by a re-induction of 12 Patriots Hall of Famers in a ceremony that is free and open to the public at 3 p.m. on Sept. 20 in the plaza outside The Hall. (Boston Globe, 8/27/08)
