Would the Red Sox like to wrap things up tonight and avoid a cross-country trip for Game 5? Obviously. That doesn’t make it a “must-win.”

So what's the rotation for the Tampa series?
This all gets a little confusing, so let’s take this in order (and read slowly) while stressing that the Sox will need a fourth starter in this series.

Red Sox roar into ALCS

Bring on the Rays. There is plenty of champagne left in New England and Mayor Menino has sent the duck boats to have their tires rotated. (Boston Globe, 12 a.m.)
Bob Ryan

Squeezing out all the drama

It was an evening of superb baseball, ending with two innings of the kind of drama that only baseball among all our sports can provide. (Boston Globe, 12 a.m.)

Lester rises to the challenge

Jon Lester's feats so far this postseason challenge belief, defy expectation. He has twice faced the lineup that won more games than any other major league team and for 14 innings has not allowed an earned run. (Boston Globe, 12 a.m.)
Looking for curve shaped Lowrie at-bat

Looking for curve shaped Lowrie at-bat

Jed Lowrie wasn't thinking about being a hero when he strode to the plate in the ninth inning of a tie game last night, the potential winning run staring at him from second base in the form of Jason Bay. (Boston Globe, 12 a.m.)

Injured Lowell left off ALCS roster

The pain was too much for Mike Lowell . Having him attempt to play was too painful - and too damaging - for the Red Sox. So after a consultation with doctors, the third baseman was removed from the American League Division Series roster, making him ineligible for the ALCS. (Boston Globe, 12 a.m.)
Angels notebook

Angels' momentum had short shelf life

Baseball managers are creatures of habit, so if it worked in Game 3 of the American League Division Series, why would Mike Scioscia deviate now? (Boston Globe, 12 a.m.)

Angels went down when bunt didn't

Down, two games to one, in the best-of-five American League Division Series, the Angels were playing for the moment. Inning by inning. Pitch by pitch. Heartbeat by heartbeat. (Boston Globe, 12 a.m.)
Rays 6, White Sox 2 > Rays win ALDS

Staying on straight line

Rocco Baldelli was soaking wet, dripping champagne from head to toe, when he left his teammates for a moment and headed out the clubhouse door to find his dad. (Boston Globe, 12 a.m.)

Beckett wasn't close to pitcher perfect

Josh Beckett climbed the mound Sunday night and, damaged as he was, issued a performance that seemed not quite right. The October chill set in, the fans dressed in parkas and mittens. And Beckett, the final piece to the familiar fall scene, foundered. (Boston Globe, 12 a.m.)

There's a lot of pressure on Jon Lester

Jon Lester has a very important job at Fenway tonight, the ramifications of which range beyond simply ensuring the Red Sox do not board a plane bound for Anaheim and Game 5 of the ALDS. (Globe, 10/6/08)
Game 3 > Angels 5, Red Sox 4
Heaven can wait (Globe Staff / Stan Grossfeld)

Heaven can wait

The Angels, who scored four runs off Red Sox starter Josh Beckett, lived to play another day after pulling out a 5-4 victory in 12 innings last night at Fenway. Dustin Pedroia (left) was 0 for 5 and is 0 for 13 in the series. The Red Sox still lead the ALDS, two games to one. (Boston Globe, 10/6/08)
Dan Shaughnessy

12-inning loss spoils the party

A shocker. The Red Sox did not uncork more bubbly last night. They did not smoke cigars and spray suds over one another. Jonathan Papelbon did not dance on the Fenway lawn for the 11 o'clock news. (Boston Globe, 10/6/08)
Bob Ryan

Twelfth of never: Game a real drag

It took them five hours and 19 minutes and 16 more stranded baserunners, but the Orange County American League Baseball Representative Angels finally found a way to beat the Red Sox last night. (Boston Globe, 10/6/08)
Red Sox notebook

Pedroia quick to take hit for his poor stats

While virtually no one in the Red Sox clubhouse expressed frustration at not closing out the Angels last night in their American League Division Series, there was plenty of frustration on a personal level in front of one locker. (Boston Globe, 10/6/08)

Wobbly Beckett grits it out

Josh Beckett insisted his pitches simply missed, just barely, nothing more. Beckett had transformed from baseball's reigning king of the postseason to just another pitcher not, he said, because of any injury. (Boston Globe, 10/6/08)
