Williams's daughter pleads for help in fight over burial

By Globe Staff, 7/11/2002

A daughter of Ted Williams issued an impassioned appeal yesterday for help to have what she said was her father's wish to be cremated carried out. Bobbie-Jo Williams Ferrell called on President George W. Bush and his father as well as former US senator John Glenn to come forward if they have any information about her father's last wishes.

Calling John Henry Williams's desire to have her father's body frozen an ''insane plan'' and ''against Daddy's wishes,'' Ferrell said she was left with no choice but to go to the media to call for help.

''I need anyone and everyone, famous or not, if they have knowledge about my Daddy's wishes to be cremated, to stand up and be heard at this time,'' Ferrell said in a statement. ''My Daddy served many missions for this country, which he loved so dearly. It is unfortunate that I have been put into a corner to fight for what is right and for my father's final wishes. I too am on a final mission - to save Ted Williams.''

Ferrell said that although she is a private person, her brother's actions had left her no choice but to make a public plea. ''John Glenn appreciated my Daddy's being his wingman,'' she said. ''I want John Glenn to come forward now, and come to his friend's aid. John Glenn, my Daddy desperately needs a wingman right now! President Bush and his father need to come forward and work in this campaign for your old friend like he worked for you.''

Farrell added that she finds it ironic that she was calling on help from the media - ''the very entity, the press, which Daddy thought was against him'' to try to save him.
