Public tribute in San Diego
By Chris Forsberg, Globe Correspondent, 7/16/2002
Five hundred fans, a mixture of young and old, heard Enberg deliver a half-hour speech on Williams's life. Breitbard, who grew up with Williams in San Diego, also treated the fans to an original photograph of Williams with Babe Ruth, as well as another of the Sox star with Bobby Orr and Larry Bird. One of the bats used when Williams hit .406 also was on display. Enberg didn't shy away from the controversy surrounding Williams's remains and closed the night by advising John Henry Williams, ''to let the old fisherman go back to the sea.'' The San Diego Hall of Champions is a three-level museum in Balboa Park celebrating the accomplishments of local athletes.
