Duxbury, the defending Division 2 Super Bowl champion, headed into the season with a new quarterback who had yet to start a game. But Sean McCarthy seemed completely relaxed under center, driving the offense with his quick playmaking ability.

“It was his first game as a starter and he did a great job,” said coach Dave Maimaron. “He made some big plays with his legs and really commanded the offense. I’m really pleased with his performance.”

McCarthy completed 6 of 11 passes in the first half, but most of his production came on the ground. He finished with more than 10 carries and a rushing touchdown.

Duxbury running back Jon Hurvitz was the difference, breaking a 61-yard run in the third quarter to give the Green Dragons a 14-7 lead. On their next drive, McCarthy and Hurvitz carried the ball a combined five times for Duxbury’s final score of the day.

The senior running back gave all the credit to his offensive line, which did a great job blocking for him, allowing him to finish with 16 carries, 210 yards, and two touchdowns.

“He doesn’t need much room,” Maimaron said. “He gets a little seam and he could bust it. It’s great having him back there.”

Bridgewater-Raynham kept the game close in the beginning, and it was tied at 7 at the half. However, crucial mistakes like a fumbled snap and a kickoff recovered by Duxbury slowed the Trojans in the second half.

Walpole 47, Braintree 0 — Rebels junior quarterback Will Bolster was 6 of 7 for 108 yards and a touchdown, while senior Mike Rando, who missed all of last season with a torn MCL, had three rushes for 91 yards and two catches for 79 yards.

Newton North 21, Waltham 8 — Jack Boucher threw two touchdown passes to Ryan Quinn for the host Tigers.

New Bedford 34, Taunton 20 — Kevin Nunes caught two touchdown passes from Mike Rapoza to lead the host Whalers.

Haverhill 42, Malden 12 — Senior running back Chance Brady rushed for 226 yards and four touchdowns on 17 carries for the Hillies. Quarterback Tommy Morgan was 10 of 17 for 103 yards and a touchdown.
