MIAA Football subcommittee grants division changes for seven schools

BURLINGTON — Sixteen North sectional schools pleaded their case before the MIAA Football subcommittee to change divisions on Wednesday. Six went home happy. Combined with Tuesday’s South appeals, 27 schools asked to move divisions. Seven were granted their wish. Only one, Sharon, was moved up a division.
Schools have until Jan. 15 to notify the MIAA that they will appeal the subcommittee decisions. Any further appeals will be heard Jan. 22 before the full committee.
Winners from the North were Wilmington (from Division 3 Northeast to Division 3 Northwest, swapping places with Boston Latin), Bedford and Belmont (dropping to Division 4), Greater Lowell and St. Mary’s (dropping to Division 5), and Chelsea (dropping to Division 6).
Schools denied changes were Lawrence, Lexington, Peabody, Chelmsford, Reading, Revere, Arlington Catholic, Lowell Catholic, Matignon, and Pope John.
Westford, Malden Catholic, Lincoln-Sudbury, Billerica, and Winthrop all asked to remain in their divisions and none were moved.
The MIAA also announced the results of the South appeals, held Tuesday in Norwood. Dennis-Yarmouth’s appeal was granted and the school will move from Division 3 Southeast to Division 4.
To make the divisions even, Sharon was bumped up from Division 4 to Division 3 Southeast.
