The Garment District in Cambridge
Many people think that the Garment District is a specific street in Boston devoted to clothing stores. But the Garment District is actually a department store located in a bright-pink building in Cambridge.
The Garment District Inc. opened in 1986, and houses an eclectic array of vintage and contemporary clothing. Boston Costume teamed up with the company and visitors can sift through wigs, costumes, and dress-up attire for any occasion. You can also find shoes and accessories for any outfit.
The Garment District processes several million pounds of clothing a year. A lot of it is purchased from charitable organizations. Some of the items are sold for a dollar a pound, and some is sent to the developing world for reuse.
