WOODY HILL BED & BREAKFAST
Innkeeper Ellen Madison offers guests more than a cozy room in her reproduction Colonial farmhouse in Westerly, R.I. On several winter weekends guests and the public can learn how to prepare a meal in the 18th-century manner, over an open hearth. Participants will learn how to use a reflector oven, spider, hanging griddle, gypsy kettle, and beehive oven as they prepare dishes such as pear chutney, bread pudding, biscuits, roast pork, and turkey. Theyll learn to judge the heat by holding their palms over the coals. And, perhaps most important, theyll learn to read recipes by candlelight. 149 South Woody Hill Road, 401-322-0452, www.woodyhill.com - Ellen Albanese
